Within Brazil, the quickest way to get to Santarém is to fly. It would also be possible to fly to a Manaus or Belém and then take a boat but that takes an extra several days. There are roads leading to Santarém from different regions and you could rent a car or take a bus but that’s not recommended. Well, it would be an adventure in itself and certainly is intersting but, in combination with the Rainforest Ultra, probably not something that many people would attempt.
Your travel agent or booking platforms like Expedia or Booking.com should be able to give you a number of options. Most flights to Santarém will be via Belém, i.e. whatever country you fly from and whatever your routing is within Brazil, Belém is likely the best point to connect to. For some, Manaus also may work. Of course, flight connections change and airlines change their routes. Right now (end of 2024) airlines flying from Belém to Santarém and back are Azul, Latam and Gol.
Obviously, as you do with any air travel, please check on the luggage limits and on goods you must not bring into Brazil. There are quite a few restrictions on food!
Some general travel tipps are:
- Do not book connections that are too tight. Otherwise, you risk arriving in Santarém without your luggage.
- If your journey is very long and you can afford it timewise, why not plan for a stopover on the way, e.g. in Rio de Janeiro, Lisbon or whatever other exciting city you come through on the way.
- Take your bathroom essentials and some extre clothing in your hand luggage. That way, if your luggage is delayed, at least you do not need to go buy clothing, toothpaste, toothbrush, etc. just for a day or two.
